There is no denying that a lot of businesses are going to find it tough over the coming months.  Coronavirus has led to a level of uncertainty not seen since the second world war. And you may be thinking about cutting your marketing spend until we come out the other side.  You may want to think again.

We all know the phrase “out of sight, out of mind”, and in the digital age we now live in, this has never been more true.  Consumers are extremely fickle and loyalties are easily switched. If you’re thinking you can turn off your marketing and then pick up where you left off in a few months time, think again. In an increasingly competitive world, the only way to consistently beat the competition is to stay connected with your audience.

Even if demand  for your product or service falls over the coming months, you still need to engage with your target audience and stay in touch with your existing customers.

Five top tips for engaging customers during the coronavirus outbreak

  1. Review your buyer personas.  Remember… your customers do not want your product or service, they want a solution to their pains and problems.  Are these still the same or have they changed?
  2. Change your offering and/or message.  Once you have identified your customers needs you may need to change your product offering or you may need to change the messaging.  Customers need to know that what you are offering will provide a solution to their problem.
  3. Communicate your message.  Keep telling your customers what you do, who you do it for and why they need your product or service in their lives.
  4. Build authority.  If you really can’t provide your customers with a solution to their problem at the moment, take the opportunity to build trust and authority.  Write blogs that will educate and delight, create useful downloads and publish customer testimonials. It’s also a good time to be building and sharing customer case studies.
  5. Stay in touch. Email campaigns are a great way to let your existing customers know you are still there.  This isn’t about the hard sell, it’s about creating a drip campaign to let them know you still exist and you still care.

Gaining and retaining customers is about investment.  Investment in both time and money.  Reducing your marketing now may leave your brand in a less competitive position when we come out of the other side.  And the investment required then to get you back to where you are now, even greater.
